Mr Michael Gutteridge of Haslemere, Surrey, became known to many Methodists for the first time at the Cardiff Conference of 1911. There he offered to give £5000 towards building a College in Cambridge for the training of Graduates for the Methodist Ministry. He appealed to others to help him in this undertaking. The offer was gratefully accepted, and from that time Mr Gutteridge regularly set aside sums of money towards a Trust fund for this purpose.
